The Coke Ban

The Holy Week went through unnoticed. It was too fast-paced that we hadn't really experienced a satisfying rest. A lot of unexpected things came, some happy, mostly sad.

First off, one precious thing left us, one I cannot disclose here on my blog because I promised my eldest son, none of it will be posted. It hurts him that much.

So during the Holy Thursday and Good Friday, we were just home, having a DVD marathon and playing Uno with the kids. We ate and slept as we decided not to fast, but to feast in order to recover lost stamina during the lengthy days we were working overtime for graduation needs.

Last Saturday, we went home to MIL's place, we stayed there until Sunday but that Saturday night was a nightmare. Tabebs woke up in the middle of the night crying heaps and complaining about a painful chest. I didn't know what to do, she was having mild fever and coughs, but the pain near the chest area was something I did not understand. I had a sleepless Saturday, I took to massaging her chest, applying Vicks, letting her drink water, but the pain remained. I was so clueless as to what could have been the reason, but I had in mind a suspicion as to what could have attacked her.

So that Easter Sunday morning, we brought her to the OPD Clinic of a nearby hospital, had her temperature checked and urine taken for analysis. And when we went back in the afternoon for the result, my suspicion was correct. UTI.

Much to our desire to have a good rest, we earlier had grocery shopping and bought 4 liters of Coke and some junk foods. We did not have much junks though, we even had more fruits, but the Coke, tsk tsk, the Coke.

So that very Easter, hubby and I decided not to ever ever bring Coke to our household (unless for party use).

We have totally banned Coke inside our household. Yes, inside our household. We can still drink Coke outside, as it is almost always part of the package on Jollibee meals and other restos and occasional trips to fastfoods. But never buy Coke anymore for fridge consumption.

We have learned our lesson now. However, as hubby says: Coke gives him power. So yesterday, when he said he needed power, off the two of us went to Robinsons just to drink Coke, but definitely not for the kids. We will never ever have the kids drink this culprit ever again.

Wish me luck friends, as this thing I'm going through is as tempting as can be. So I pray, "Deliver us from this evil."

kay mo yan sheng! anyway, coke is not entirely evil. drink in moderation lang. ehem ehem.

you know what, sheng? i don't drink coke that much anymore. as in once in a blue moon na lang, and when i do, i don't the satisfaction anymore compared before (nung coke fanatic pa ako). parang napapaitan na ako. kaya nakikinita ko na na hindi na talaga ako magcoke (baka sprite naman. he he) coming from a recovering addict, it means much to me! :)

as much as possible, pag may parties, i opt to buy iced tea or yung fruit drinks. convenient na din nowadays kasi they already come in liter size na din! ^_^ yey!

Why not slowly try fruit juices like dole or delmonte instead of softdrinks. Masarap na healthy pa. Its all in the mind lang. Ako kc before was a coke fanatic, kaso imagine mo yung sugar content nya oh my...oh my.
hayun...so goodluck and enjoy!

good luck to you and your family sheng. the good thing is you and husband are a team when it comes to avoiding coke :) it will be easier for the whole family to stay away from coke because you are in it together.

i'm not a softdrink drinker so we only have them inside the home when we have visitors. my husband drinks softdrinks but thru me, he was able to wean himself and i've converted him to drink water all the time. so it's very doable--it may take time but it can really be done :)

You can do it! I don't stock up on softdrinks at home. (In general, I'm not fond of softdrinks.) I wonder though when will the day come that there's zero stocks of chocolates in our house. ;)

Wow, last time I played Uno was a year ago. Or wait, maybe 2 years ago. Man, I love that game. Meron ako dalawa o tatlong nabili nun dati, lagi kasing nawawala o nasisira!

Sobrang hindi talaga maganda sa health and softdrinks. Meron kaming store, we sell softdrinks and they sell like hot pancakes kasi ang init, syempre gusto ng mga tao ng malamig. Araw araw malakas. Eh benta nga namin yun, na tetempt rin ako kung minsan pero pinipigilan ko sarili ko. Masama ang marami! Mga once a week lang siguro.

I am confused. Is UTI urinary tract infection? What is the role of coke here? I know my grandchildren get hyper drinking softdrinks (coke, pepsi, etc.)that's why we very seldom give them any, if at all.

sheng, if my wife, our kid and myself can abstain from drinking any brand of softdrinks since december last year, so can you. it's ok to have it once in a while particularly in parties or outside when nothing is available but coke. it's all in the will power!

btw, don't ever disregard pain. regardless of body part, age and onset, it requires medical observation and proper management. that's my 2 cents worth.
