The Case of the P0.25 Centavo Coins

I bought a bottle of mineral water today and paid P20 for the P9.50 bottle. The cashier cashed in and gave me my change, a P10 coin. I asked for my 50 cents and the cashier, irritated as she may be, gave me a peso.

I told her I want the right change, and she told me, the Central Bank no longer issues 25 centavo coins. This may be true or not, but this just irks me as much. I don't understand why the Central Bank would not mint nor issue 25 centavo coins, because these coins are just plain necessary for customers, consumers and establishments alike. We all have the right for the correct change. Candies are not legal tenders and so is not giving the correct amount of change, right?

Call me kuripot, but I just couldn't stand wasting my hard earned centavos to these establishments. They are already gaining from the goods they sell, yet, they want to earn more by not giving you the correct change. Ilang customers ang mag-iiwan sa kanila ng fifty centavos daily? That's a lot, right? And additional income for them at the expense of your pockets.

I urge you to demand the correct change due you. If they have nothing to give you and gives you a whole peso, get it! Problema nila yun kasi wala silang change na maibibigay sa iyo.

Or, you can bring a lot of centavos with you. Am sure marami sa bahay mo, nagkalat lang, now is the time to save. Ang mahal kaya ng lahat. We should learn to value money, even if they are measly centavos.

agree! pag nagbayad ka ng kulang, hindi pwede pero sila pwedeng magbigay ng kulang na sukli, unfair no!

korek!

sheng, pag may katwiran, ipaglaban mo! hehe. barya man yan sa iba, pagpinaubaya mo ang ganoong gawi, masasanay silang di magsukli ng tama, saka ang barya kailangan namin, like here in penang -we use coins in taking the 12-min ferry ride crossing butterworth to georgetown/downtown penang. hassle pag walang barya.

you've watched too much Lourd de Veyra videos na yata. haha! though tama naman eh. sukli mo yun. bakit, OK din ba sa kanila if kulang yung ibabayad mo ng P0.50? diba hindi?

na-inspire tuloy ako mag-post about mga barya at yung nabasa ko once. :)

sure hits the spot, esp for stores like ours. but central bank really has to do something about minting more 25 centavos so stores won't have a tough time sourcing them out. the only thing we can do (for our store, that is) is price our stuff without the .25/.50/.75 increments so we don't have a difficult time explaining to the customer when we don't have centavos for change. but good call though, its always your right as consumer to demand for the exact change..
@nanardz..akin na lng centavos mo.. i'd gladly change it. we really need those. :)

I always bring a coin purse with me so that I will give them the exact amount needed to purchase the items I want to buy. Lahat ng coins na makita ko sa bahay, car, etc i put it in my wallet because it really comes handy when your paying. Mabuti na yung tama ang bayad kesa sobra.
The little things always count. There's a Malay saying that goes "sikit-sikit, lama-lama, jadi bukit", which literally means: 'little by little, over time, becomes a mountain'.

the idea of getting the right change is right. i dont believe BSP has already stopped issuing the 25centavo coin.

daming nag-comment sheng...that means common experience natin tong lahat. mairita din ako pag di binibigyan ng tamang change, tapos yung cashier di man lng magsabi na if ok lng na kulang. hahay...kanina sa gaisano, kulang ng 60 cents sa akin. i asked for it pero prang wala lng sa cashier na kulang binigay sa akin na change...hahays na lng. kaya nga ngayon nag-iipon na uli ako ng 5, 10 at 25 cents sa wallet :)
