10 Steps to a Good Memory

Image
Well, let us accept it, we are definitely not getting any younger and even younger ones have a way with memory, because sometimes, our memory fails us. It is like a tire that is being used everyday, and so the tire has to wear out and sometimes, flattens, balds over time, and in due time will have to be sent to the shop for a check. The same way goes with our memory, thus in order for us not to bring our memories to the shop, I will share here ten steps to boost your memory. I found this while de-cluttering our house on the first day of the year and has become helpful to me. I considered this as a sign to a good guide to 2011. I hope this guides you as well. 1. Get yourself a sleep. Sleep deprivation lowers your immune system, weakens your defenses against sickness and leads you to mental fatigue and poor memory. 2. Set your body clock. Maintaining a regular body clock is just getting enough sleep. If you go to bed early and rise early, keep it that way. It easily coordinates your bod...

Better Safe Than Sorry (Story No. 1)

Image
Yes, I'd say one must better be safe than sorry. When dengue cases erupted and death rates scored the statistics to its highest, I was scared for the kids and myself. The neighborhood around MIL's place have a stagnant or "not-fast-running water" on the ditch. We make it a point to clean the ditch every now and then but for some unknown reasons, the neighbors a few blocks away keep blocking its flow. Hence, water does not really flow fast and stagnates, allowing for the reproduction of mosquitoes. We have been living there for more than ten years already and only going home to our own house during the weekends or long holidays. I'd say the mosquito bites bring the itch but who knows when it will bring the dengue virus, right? So as a mother, I make it a point to keep safe the kids and use the mosquito net. We have it handy since we got kids and I do not allow my kids to be exposed without the mosquito repellent. For the information of all, I am a mosquito-hater. I...

Proper Breathing Means Healthy Living

Image
Last week, my daughter was diagnosed with broncho--pneumonia, prescribed with an antibiotics and medicines for the cough and the colds. This week, it is the son who was diagnosed with the same, broncho-pneumonia. In my kids' school, there are a lot of children having flu and the worst thing is, dengue cases are rampant here in our side of the world. Nowadays, you really have to take care of your health. Or else you will have to suffer spending money over medicines that will relieve you from your situation. Know that the best thing is always prevention, and not cure. So in order to prevent having to get sick, deep breathing is relatively important. Studies have shown that learning how to properly breathe is important because proper breathing can help and is effective in making you live healthy. Here are steps to proper deep breathing: 1. Take a deep breath, hear yourself inhale. 2. Hold your breath for a short time. 3. Exhale. This time, hear yourself exhale as well. 4. Exhale again...

Meet Guillain-Barré Syndrome

Image
A friend of ours, wife of hubby's distant relative died last Sunday. The news shocked us all because, first, the last we saw each other was June 6, burial of a relative also. She was really healthy that time we saw each other, we thought she was feeling all right. Second, she is only 34 years old, so young at that age, and she left her 5-year old only child to the husband. According to stories, it all started last April, she had been feeling headaches, and recurring headaches the following months. The husband said she had been attacked by head-splitting headaches that she could not sleep, area around her eyes were already very dark. According to him, of the 24 hours, she only had 2 hours of sleep. And that was her daily routine. In two weeks time, her pains and sleepless nights plunged. She became blind partially, then totally. The doctors could not decipher the cause of all these pains and agonies she's felt. The tests, MRI, CT-scan and other lab results showed negative. The h...

2009 Year-end Sickness

Image
It's been a long time that I am annoyed with my cough and colds. More than three weeks already. This started soon after hubby went to Iloilo, and when he came back, I was already wiping the nose. I didn't bother taking meds at first because I thought it will just go away with water therapy. But weeks came, and the cough felt like staying, and worsening. My first ever to be this sick since birth as I have been healthy all along. I only visited the hospital twice in my lifetime, and that is to give birth to my kids. And the only docs I visited were my OB, and my allergocologist. I self-medicated knowing a little help from here and there will do the trick, but the meds I took were of no avail as I felt myself crawling in sick. I still have duties to finish and the holidays are rushing, so I was off to and fro to finish stuffs, buy this and that, go there and there, attend parties and events, until, after Christmas day, I felt chest pains every time I cough. I miss the feeling of r...

Crazy Weather

Image
The start of the Christmas season brought me to my noses. Yes, you heard it right, because from time to time, I would touch my nose and sniff. It's been a long while that I have not had any cold, or any fever, but when bacteria attacks, be careful, they attack the kids first. We do have a crazy weather here, and I don't know how to figure this crazy weather out. It is scorching hot in the mornings till noon, and rains in the afternoon, while it's awfully cold especially in the wee mornings. My boy was the first attacked by the flu, next is Tabebs, and now, it's my turn. I'm just thankful that my kids didn't have some serious colds, i was able to give them a few drops of the medication and they're up and about. No one can pretend to be the PAGASA by just checking the clouds for it will only be a disappointment. So just to be sure, here are a few tips. 1. Wear jackets or something that will keep you warm especially in the cold mornings . If you can get yourse...

Fighting Migraine

Image
I have migraine, and I just have to share this few knowledge with you I have learned from my readings. A migraine headache is a throbbing or pulsating headache that is often one sided (unilateral) and associated with nausea; vomiting; sensitivity to light, sound, and smells; sleep disruption; and depression. Attacks are often recurrent and tend to become less severe as the migraine sufferer ages. Some women experience migraine headaches just prior to or during menstruation. These headaches, which are called menstrual migraines, may be related to hormonal changes and often do not occur or lessen during pregnancy. Other women develop migraines for the first time during pregnancy or after menopause. Types of Migraine Migraine with aura is characterized by a neurological phenomenon (aura) that is experienced 10 to 30 minutes before the headache. Most auras are visual and are described as bright shimmering lights around objects or at the edges of the field of vision (called scintillating ...

Hotel room...NOT!

Image
If there's one place in this world that i hate going to, they're HOSPITALS . I was told by my folks that hospitals are the dirtiest, most germ-infected, most illness-filled place in the planet. They said one who frequent places like hospitals easily gets infected or contaminated with diseases. Of course I believed them, and i never went to hospitals unless i was the one who's ill or a close friend or relative must be visited. But not this one. Recently, we visited St. Elizabeth Hospital and we were so amazed at what we saw. presidential suite (right view) (left view) private suite private room Hotel rooms? Nah, They're hospital rooms, patterned after St. Luke's Hospital, i love the feel of the homely room, very clean and fragrant, and you will not be accustomed to the hospital-feel, but will indeed have a good time recuperating and resting well. Explained by the hospital director, Mr. Tony Veneracion, the hospital floor (3rd floor) is an addition to the building...

First Off, Wash Hands!

Image
Well, I guess I was not washing my hands well or I forgot to wash my hands that's why I got this flu. But then, here's a little reminder for us. Swine flu can be prevented, and as to how, get back to the basics! Wash hands! A delicious warm pizza, a good-luck gem, or a friendly pat on the pet dog are just a few of the presents kids love to bring home to Mom and Dad. But behind these adorable gifts, millions of germs could be lurking. Kids don't always listen when you tell them to wash their hands before eating, but it's a message worth repeating. Hand washing is by far the best way to prevent germs from spreading and to keep your kids from getting sick. Germs can be transmitted in many ways, including: * touching dirty hands * changing dirty diapers * through contaminated water and food * through droplets released during a cough or a sneeze * via contaminated surfaces * through contact with a sick person's body fluids * via handrails and other things y...

Oh My Gulay!

Image
When I was a kid, I hated veggies. For me, it felt so yucky and I just couldn't muster up the strength to swallow it. Until I went to college, the room I had was full of canned goodies my Mom scoops up in my bag to bring to our boarding house, in case I'd be too lazy to go to the cafeteria to eat. My friends eat at the nearby kiosk and they get to eat ampalaya with egg and pinakbet, but I always order adobong chicken or afritada. I really don't like vegetables. I HATE Veggies! NOT! Not until I realized I could die not having it. When I got married, I learned to whip things up in the kitchen and that includes those green leafy vegetables that once felt ultimately yucky in my tongue. I have learned to make my own version of pinakbet (though not as good as my Dad's, my Mom does not cook so well, *grin*). I have forced myself to eat green leafy veggies especially malunggay, saluyot, pechay, cabbage and root crops like carrots and potatoes. Today, my day is incomplete withou...
